Top Wellness & Spa Experiences in Kampala (Maisha Spa Guide)
The best spa, wellness, and treatment experiences in greater Kampala — from the Maisha & Spirit Spa next door to HMK Living, through the Serena Mind Body & Spirit, to city-centre wellness alternatives. Tier access, treatment menu, and what to book.

Wellness and spa hospitality has become one of Kampala's quieter luxury success stories. The city's top spas now compete with anywhere in East Africa — and the relative value, in international terms, is exceptional. This guide covers the venues that matter, what to book, and how to access them as an HMK Living guest or a visitor.
The two Maisha spas
A short note on naming, because it confuses everyone: there are two related Maisha-branded spas in Kigo.
The first is the Maisha Mind Body & Spirit Spa, located inside the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort. It is the resort's full-service spa wing, with a treatment menu sized for a 124-room resort and the polish of the Serena brand.
The second is the Maisha & Spirit Spa, a standalone boutique spa directly adjacent to HMK Living. Same brand family, smaller, more private — closer in feel to an urban spa than a resort spa. This is the spa HMK Living guests access by default.
Both are excellent. The Serena's is the right pick if you are staying at the resort or want the full resort-spa experience; the standalone Maisha & Spirit is the right pick if you want a quieter, more intimate session.
What to book at Maisha & Spirit (the HMK Living adjacent spa)
The treatment menu is built around four pillars:
Signature massages
The signature 60-minute Maisha massage is the most-booked treatment — a Swedish-deep tissue hybrid with locally-sourced shea butter and a calming herbal balm. The 90-minute version adds scalp and feet. Best after travel or a long flight.
Hammam and body scrubs
The hammam suite is the standout feature. A traditional steam-and-scrub ritual lasting 45–60 minutes — eucalyptus steam, full-body exfoliation, rinse, and a final mineral wrap. The combination leaves skin notably softer for several days. Best as the centrepiece of a half-day spa visit.
Facials
Tropical-skin facials are a Maisha specialty. The signature 60-minute facial uses local botanical extracts (moringa, baobab, frankincense) and is calibrated for the equatorial sun exposure most visitors arrive with. Good for travellers; better in series for residents.
Wellness rituals
Full-day packages combining multiple treatments. The Platinum Wellness Day is the top-of-menu option: arrival herbal tea, hammam, full-body massage, signature facial, lunch, optional pool/steam access for the rest of the day. Roughly $150–180 depending on extras.
How HMK Living's tier system works at the spa
Every HMK Living residence carries an activity tier — Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum — that determines spa access. The structure:
| Tier | Spa access included |
|---|---|
| Bronze | Steam, sauna, hammam day-pass access |
| Silver | Bronze + one signature ritual bath per stay |
| Gold | Unlimited Maisha treatments during the stay |
| Platinum | Gold + dedicated wellness concierge + Platinum Wellness Day |
Activity tier is determined by residence type (Penthouse = Platinum by default, 2BHK = Gold, 1BHK = Silver, Studio = Bronze) and can be upgraded on request. Soft-opening bookings in Q1 2026 receive an automatic Silver tier upgrade on Studio Deluxe and 1BHK Suite stays — the Founding Guest package.
Every spa booking is made from the residence through the agentic WhatsApp concierge. No reception, no phone tag — the booking is confirmed and the spa expects you at the agreed time.
The Serena Mind Body & Spirit Spa
For the more resort-scale experience, the Serena's spa wing is two minutes' drive from HMK Living. Notable differences from the standalone Maisha & Spirit:
- Larger suite count — more capacity, especially for groups
- Couples treatment room — dedicated room for two-person treatments
- Resort-pool access included — the infinity pool is part of the spa visit
- Slightly higher pricing — typically $10–20 more per treatment than the standalone
Most HMK Living guests rotate between the two — using the standalone Maisha for individual treatments (privacy, proximity) and the Serena's for the pool day and the couples option.
Beyond the Maisha brand: other Kampala wellness venues
For the curious, a brief mention of the broader Kampala wellness scene:
Kabira Country Club Spa
Inside the Kabira Country Club. A members-and-guests spa with a strong massage menu, less ambitious on the ritual side than Maisha. Good lunch-and-massage option for travellers in the Kabira/Naguru area.
Speke Resort Spa (Munyonyo)
The lakeside resort's in-house spa. Resort-scale, similar in style to the Serena's. Best if you are already at Speke for a meeting or stay.
Le Petit Village Spa (Kololo)
A boutique spa attached to Le Petit Village hotel. The smallest of the luxury options but tightly curated. Strong on aromatherapy.
Pearl of Africa Spa (Sheraton Kampala)
The Sheraton's spa wing. A more business-hotel feel than the others. Suits short business trips where the city-centre location matters more than the experience.
A practical first-spa-day plan
A useful first-time HMK Living wellness day:
- Morning — light breakfast, walk the lakeside path
- 11:00 — arrive at Maisha & Spirit (one-minute walk from HMK Living)
- 11:15–12:15 — hammam ritual
- 12:30–13:30 — signature 60-minute massage
- 13:45–14:45 — light lunch at the spa cafe or back at the residence
- 15:00–16:00 — pool deck, quiet reading
- 18:00 — in-residence dinner or Serena's Tropic restaurant
The total comes to roughly $90–120 on Bronze or Silver tier. On Gold or Platinum, the treatments are included and the only out-of-pocket cost is lunch.
What to bring (and what not to)
The spas provide robes, slippers, towels, and basic toiletries. Bring:
- Swimwear (the pool deck and some treatments require it)
- A book or a downloaded podcast for the relaxation rooms
- Cash or a card for tipping (10–15% is appreciated)
- Sunscreen if you plan to use the outdoor pool after the treatment
Do not bring jewellery (lockers are provided but unnecessary trouble), heavy makeup (it comes off in the steam), or electronics — Maisha & Spirit Spa has a quiet-zone policy that is gently but firmly enforced.
Booking ahead
For HMK Living guests, no advance booking is required for tier-included services — the concierge schedules during the residence stay. For visitors not staying at HMK Living, book 24–48 hours in advance for weekday treatments and 3–5 days ahead for weekends. Saturday afternoons book up fastest.
To plan a wellness-led stay, reserve a 1BHK Suite or Penthouse at HMK Living and tell the concierge your wellness preferences when confirming the booking — the spa team will pre-block treatments for the dates you want.
Kampala's spa scene has matured into something genuinely competitive at the high end. The Maisha brand in particular has reset the bar for what spa hospitality looks like in East Africa. For a wellness-led stay, the Kigo lakeside is now one of the more interesting under-priced options on the continent.

Common questions about this topic.
The Maisha & Spirit Spa next door to HMK Living and the Maisha Mind Body & Spirit Spa inside the Lake Victoria Serena Resort are the two highest-rated wellness venues in greater Kampala. They share a brand family but operate independently — the standalone Maisha & Spirit Spa is more private, the Serena's is more resort-scale.
